Abstract

Abstract. Introduction. In arid regions with high dust levels, the reduction in the performance of photovoltaic power plants is largely associated with an increase in the operating temperature of PV modules and the accumulation of dust deposits on panel surfaces. Under such conditions, the limited availability of high-quality fresh water required for regular panel cleaning represents an additional operational challenge.

Materials and Methods. This study develops an integrated method based on cooling the photovoltaic module with a nanofluid, utilizing the low-grade heat recovered from the PV/T loop in a membrane distillation process, and directing the produced distillate to an adaptive cleaning system for PV modules.

Results. The proposed PV/T-MD system makes it possible to reduce the operating temperature of the PV module, improve its electrical efficiency, recover useful thermal energy, and produce technically clean water. The use of the generated distillate in an adaptive panel-cleaning system reduces dependence on external freshwater sources and mitigates optical losses caused by dust accumulation on PV module surfaces. The integrated energy-technological loop enables the simultaneous production of electrical energy, useful thermal energy, and distilled water.

Conclusion. The proposed PV/T-MD system is a promising integrated technological solution for photovoltaic power plants operating under hot, arid, and dusty climatic conditions. It can improve energy efficiency, promote the rational use of water resources, and enable autonomous cleaning of PV modules.
