Abstract

The increasing concentration of biogenic elements, toxic substances, and pathogenic microorganisms in wastewater contributes to water pollution, freshwater scarcity, and growing environmental risks. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly and innovative wastewater treatment technologies has become an important scientific challenge. This study evaluates the efficiency of biotechnological treatment of poultry wastewater using aquatic macrophytes.

Materials and Methods

Poultry wastewater was treated using the aquatic macrophytes Azolla caroliniana, Lemna minor, and Eichhornia crassipes. Treatment efficiency was evaluated based on environmental and technological water quality indicators, while the biological characteristics of the selected macrophytes were also investigated.

Results

The results demonstrated that biotechnological treatment of poultry wastewater using Azolla caroliniana, Lemna minor, and Eichhornia crassipes represents a highly effective green technology with significant environmental and economic benefits. The proposed method not only improved wastewater quality but also generated valuable biomass.

Conclusion

Macrophyte-based wastewater treatment is 4–8 times less expensive than conventional chemical and membrane technologies while requiring substantially lower energy consumption. In addition, the produced biomass provides added economic value, making this approach an environmentally sustainable and economically attractive green technology for wastewater treatment.
