Abstract
The article presents information on the importance and necessity of determining the competence of engineers in modern production conditions, the content and essence of the competence-based approach, and the history of its emergence. The significance of the competence-based approach in ensuring occupational safety is shown, and the American and European definitions of competence are provided. The results of research by David McClelland and Richard Boyatzis, aimed at revealing the content of competence, are analyzed. It is substantiated that defining a competency profile is important for planning and developing a specialist's career. The author's definition of engineering competence is given.
